HOW TO: Connect to and work with Snowflake data in the Power Platform

In today’s post, I’ll be sharing a step-by-step video tutorial on how to connect to Snowflake data to Dataverse. If you’re unfamiliar with Snowflake, it is a cloud-based data warehousing platform which is becoming one of the go-to data solutions for many organisations. By connecting the two, you can leverage the power of Snowflake’s data capabilities within your Power Platform creations.

In this video, I’ll guide you through the process of setting up the connection between Snowflake and Dataverse. Whether you’re a seasoned developer or just getting started with these tools, this tutorial will provide you with a clear and easy-to-follow guide for connecting your Snowflake data to Dataverse. So without further ado, let’s dive in!

As mentioned in the video, there are several ways in which you can connect to external data sources such as Snowflake. This method uses a standard dataflow to connect which has the benefits of simplicity and ‘manipulation’ of which data to make available in Dataverse, but does create a ‘copy’ of the data in the Power Platform (Dataverse); we keep it up to date by using automatic refresh. Another method is via the creation of a virtual table within Dataverse which, by their very nature, do not hold data; rather, they populate with external data at runtime only (so when someone or something tells that Dataverse table to get its data…). This is more of an advanced method, but comes with the benefit of never copying data unnecessarily; the method shown in this video is more straightforward, but should be used for non-sensitive data in line with your local compliance, governance and data protection standards. This method does NOT allow users to write/create/update/delete data within Snowflake itself, rather, simply access (or ‘view’) this data within the Power Platform.

Enjoy!
